"This copy is the first, or among the very first copies recieved by the publisher from the printer ... in the original laveled envelope addressed to Mr. Lawrence Ferlinghetti ... Fourteen extremely careful pencil corrections in the text, [some] incorporated in later printings. The envelope is annotated in pencil in Ferlinghetti's hand 'Advance Airmail Copy.' ... The postmark is clearly August, 1956. ... There are currently only three copies of HOWL (first printing) available in the trade ...
